Calling a JavaScript function

Hi All,
I am new to teamsite.
I have a requirement where I am suppose to write a validation on JS so that the content writer should not exceeds 2000 characters in textarea.
I am able to write the js but I am unable to call it in txtare item.

I have done it in jsps,but am unable to do it in DCT.
Kindly help as I have been provided a very tough deadline.

Refer to the Teamsite FormsPublisher:FormAPI Developer’s Guide , the Sample User Scripts section..
there are a lot of examples on validation and calling a .js file from your datacapture file. i think it'll be really helpful.

For straight validation-regex - see the FormsPublisher Developer's Guide
For JavaScript regex - see the FormsPublisher FormAPI Developer's Guide

If you're using a plain-text textarea - the validation code should be pretty trivial.
If you're using a WYSIWYG textarea - the validation code becomes more complex because you need to consider whether or not you count the mark-up characters when validating - e.g.:[html]

Hello World

[/html]Is the above 11 or 38 characters long?

Keep in mind - that the FormAPI validation is generally handled as post-operative - i.e. you wait until the text has been entered and the focus has been transferred to another field (or a save request is being performed) before actually checking to see if the fields are valid -- you might be able to do some real-time while-you-type checking, but that would be more raw javascript code and not FormAPI.

If you want us to show you examples of how we do things - you should show us examples of how you're trying to do things first.

As there is no established "maxlength" for textareas (basic HTML, not a TS limitation) the only way you can try to prevent them from typing more into a textarea would be through raw javascript (not FormAPI) as such - searching on google will be your best bet to finding a possible solution.

What FormAPI and/or DCT validation-regex's will give you is the ability to validate the contents of the field (content or size / length) either onItemChange (after the focus has moved to another field) or as part of an overall validation process (onSaveValid event handler)

All of this has been discussed before (in various levels of detail) in the forums so searching (perhaps manually so, given the recent [and on-going] complaints about forum search) would be your best bet to find a ready-made solution. Better would be for you to actually try doing it yourself - post the code you tried. If it works - great!, you've documented it for the next person who asks this question. If it doesn't work - okay - at least you've put in some effort, and folks here will generally spend some time looking at and trying to assist you with, existing code.

As I said before, the concept is trivial, the details can be a bit more complex if you're working with "rich text" textareas.

If all you're looking for is someone to "give" you code, to do your work for you, you'll have to rely heavily on the "kindness of strangers".

If you're willing to put effort into it - create a simple DCT that consists of one text field and one textarea, along with your FormAPI and/or javascript code to do what you want (assuming you're using such and not just working with a validation-regex piece) and post that code.

We used various tricks, but we have a Teamsite Versioon Specific "Hack" if you will:

You can write the maxChars function to check the textarea, and it will update to a read-only field the number of characters left.

This doesn't seem to work for replicants, as you cannot get the replicant items by "name" in xpath.

There is absolutely no need for elaborated hacks.

In this post Ghoti assembled a little cross-reference to various supported solutions like Validation regex, FormAPI
"onItemChange" validation, etc. They will work with any item, single or replicant. It is often harder to decide
what the limitation should really be (include/exclude XML/HTML Tags from counting etc) than actually do it.
