Are you talking about this from DD perspective? If yes, I don't believe there is value-of-field. However, there is a value-from-field...Here is how I typically break it down:

value-from-field: this maps to any EAs / metadata or external values that were passed to the deployment via PreProcessors or something.

value-from-attribute: this maps to an attribute of some XML node.

value-from-element: this maps to an actual element / node within the XML.
