Populating a Drop-down: FormAPI or Inline?

Hi,

I have a replicant container having a drop-down in my dct. The fields of the drop-down are currently populated by formAPI which reads the values from another DCR(it used callServer to invoke another IPL file and returns the values back). The issue is that when the DCR is opened in edit mode, the user gets to see only the selected value(selected at the time of saving the DCR initially) present in the dcr. Other values of the dropdown do not get populated. If I think of changing the code, it will require me to get the selected values(in case of edit mode) of all the replicants present in the DCR into some storage structure like an array and then populate the drop-down list with all the values and explicitly set the previously selected values into all the replicants(as selected) before saving it again.
This is quite cumbersome and doesn't look like the perfect way. Can this be achieved easily with an inline command?

Specifically, if I use an inline command to populate the drop-down values, will all of them(the initially selected value should still be the selected value) be retained in the edit mode?

Any pointers on the approach please?

The inline command usage does retain all the values in the dcr in edit mode and the selected one too.
