P2V Migration of TS Server

Hi,

Have any one tried the VMWare P2V Migration of TS Server on Windows? Instead of installing TS, copy the backing store from old server to the new server, I am planning to use VMWare convertor to copy the whole TS server (with windows, TS, backing store...) to the new VM Server.

Please let me know if you ran in to any problems.

I usually just copy the whole VM over. The only time I have used converter is to change the size of the disk.

You may have a myriad of connection issues due to host name changing, license invalid, etc but they can be worked through.

That being said 6.5 is (or soon will be EOL [end of life]) so you should be planning to upgrade soon.

Currenly the TS Server is not a VM. Its a physical server. We would ike to migrate the physical TS Server to the VM Server using the converter. So, I guess it should be ok.

Got it. Good idea. It *should* work, but I have never tried to create a VM from an existing server.

you probably wont need new license if you maintain the same hostname/IP.
I hope you will shutdown the physical box before starting up the vm copy.

Could you please let me know the timeline of 6.5 EOL? I could not locate the EOL date for 6.5 in support or in devnet.

you probably wont need new license if you maintain the same hostname/IP.
I hope you will shutdown the physical box before starting up the vm copy.

Since its a production box, we would like to use a temp license key first and make sure everything is working fine. So it will be a new hostname and IP. Also, the physical box and VM copy will be sychronized so that we won't lose any data from TS.

People always run into issues when they try to copy an existing installation and then change IP/hostname. A lot of them end up doing fresh install.
there are threads on here about changing TS IP/hostname after TeamSite is installed, so you might want to go thru them first to get sense of you will be doing after you copy.

Traditionally IWOV announced version's EOL and final year of support around the shipping date of the "Version over Next".
So, 6.5 EOL would have been announced near TS 7.0 shipping Date (eg, just about now). With the Autonomy - who knows
