Hello everyone.
Can anyone point me to a good online resource where I can learn the basics involved in creating templates for interwoven?
Many thanks,
Alicia

1. Best way is to join for an Interwoven training course for Interwoven products. You could get the details from Interwoven's website and register online too.
2. If you have the product manuals, you could start reading basics from there.
3. If you have installed TeamSite Templating on your server you will notice various out-of-the-box templates. In addition, a help folder is also created that you could check.
4. Ofcourse DevNet is best for questions that you come accross and also for various Tech Articles that you may want to search for and read.
Just thought of sharing my experience!

Hi,
Thanks for this. But we dont have Interwoven set up yet, its under consideration. I just wanted to get an idea of how templating was achieved as Ive heard a number of things.
One of them was that templates could be created using Dreamweaver MX, is that true? In such a case is an interwoven template just an HTML file with special tags located within it?
Thanks

Interwoven TeamSite Templating is a product in itself. You would need to install it to use it. These tempaltes are xML based templates that follows it's own DTD. This is then parsed through an engine with the product to give desired output. So the templates we are talking about are *
not
* just HTML pages with place holders.
Yes, templates could be created using dreamweaver mX or ultradev. But that is with a *plug-in*
VisualTemplate Builder
(Interwoven product.).
So in short, these templates are not just HTML templates but are XML based templates that are rendered through it's own engine. The advantage of using this plugin is that it provides developers with a UI to create the templating tags rather then writing a code in a code editor. On the lines of a WYSIWYG.
Hope this helps!

Alicia,
to add the the above. Templating, even though it's a product on its own, DOES NOT work by its own, it needs TeamSite to be installed as well.
(some advanced users **can** install the back engine of Teamplating and compile some presentation template without even Templating installed)
In general, Templating is a bit more than XSLT, however it's more perl-oriented, with its own XML syntax for templates (it accept custom DTD as well, though). It offers complete separation of content and presentation - the content is saved in DCRs (data content records), which are then processed by presentation templates (functionally almost identical to XSLT, with mostly perl API, though)

Since Im actually learning this on my own, is there no way to learn templating without buying the entire interwoven suite and teamsuite?

Ofcourse in order to use a product you need to atleast install it on your machine. So, TeamSite Templating will not be possible untill you have it installed on your machine.
However, depending on what you are trying to accomplish and how strong you are with programming, you could create your own templating system. But that would first require lot of programming efforts, second will be reinventing the wheel.
Hope this helps!

So is there no time limited demo of teamsuite available?

I think you could ask for such a thing - try to approach a sales person in your area

First, FYI, the "Interwoven suite" you are referring to is "TeamSite" and "TeamSite Templating" (there are other products as well) - not "teamsuite" (minor point, but terminology helps in communication)
Second, as has been suggested, you could contact Interwoven Sales and ask to be provided a demonstration. This would give you a "feel" for what the product can do.
Third, you could go through the Training course(s) without buying the product. This would give you a "feel" for both what the product can do *and* what it takes to implement it.
I say "course(s)" because before going through the TeamSite Templating course you need to go through the prerequisite Using TeamSite course (there is a web-based training [WBT] course available for Using TeamSite. TeamSite Templating is currently only available as an Instructor led training program [ILT])
If you're really interested, I'd consider option '2' first - then if you are still interested (we hope so), consider option '3' either after
or
before the actuall product purchase.

Installation of TeamSite on your local machine is possible (I don't know about licensing - ask an IW sales person about that) but it is NOT something that you do in 5 minutes. Setup can be a daunting task. I would suggest contacting your local user IW user group and see if you could see it in action.
Contact the corporate office to get a contact person for your local user group. If you are in Chicago (or close) our next meeting is Thursday 12/5
