There is no any FormAPI event associated with cancel button of a DCT. If you want to perform some custom action on cancel button's click event then you have to hack the functionality of this button.
I am giving some pointer:

Hack "Cancel" button while form is initializing
Write a custom method for your requirement
Call custom method on click event of Cancel button

View the source of Form in browser and find the Cancel button id......... that is a pointer for you. Now go ahead..........and you will be delighted.

I tried getting the state of the button in init function but it returned me null.

What does disabling the cancel button gain for you?
The user can still click on the title-bar button to close the window - which is essentially the same thing that the Cancel button does - the Cancel button provides a potentially more graceful way of closing the window without completing the tagging process.
