Executing functions parallely

Hi All,

Thanks in advance. We would like to know how we can trigger two functions in the same program at the same time in perl. The two functions should be executed parallely. Say fun a and fun b and they are executing few commandline statements. Any ideas?

Knee-jerk reflex is to reply "Use Thread::async Method".

This reply may be seriously misleading though. So, what is
the problem you are trying to solve?

The above would, I believe, only work on Unix - not on Windows - and, if I recall, doesn't really work on Unix (something to do with passing through levels of shells such that the background directive ('&') doesn't get interpreted the way you want / expect.

The threads module that Boris suggests sounds a bit more promising in this regard, but it seems to come with a lot of caveats itself (judging from the perldoc) so, again as Boris asked: "what is
the problem you are trying to solve?"

One alternative is to use a workflow with concurrent tasks in which each leg of the process flow can run a different script (letting workflow handle the "threading" for you)

We have a daily job that runs for a certain period of time say (3 hrs). During this process we regenerate all the webpages from the branches we specify in a config file. The issue we are facing is that the branch list is growing and we are unable to regen the webages during our 3 hrs window. So What I am thinking is to split the config file(where we specify the branch info) into two and start kicking of the 2 perl scripts parallely so that they both would finish off with in the 3hrs timeframe.

There is no workflow involved. This is a scheduler script that executes the perl script which does the regen.

You can create/test two OS cmd scripts, oh say Generate0.cmd and Generate1.cmd.
Then you can use the master cmd, reGenerate.cmd that will use START Commands,
possibly with /B Switch to execute both Generate0 and Generate1 on the background.
Type "START /?" from your windows prompt to see command's Flags, parameters, etc...

That said, perhaps you can change your schema to make all that more efficient?
For example, you may consider some flavor of Submitting/Publishing your "Source" components,
whatever they are. Then you may code for automatic compare and re-generate only modified
assets, etc...

What I had made after looking into your proposed solution is I have changed the script so that it takes the input parameter (the instance of the config file) and triggered the multiple instances via scheduler by specifying different parameters.

Ex: ..../regen.ipl 1
..../regen.ipl 2

Note that the script would pick up the config files like config1 and config2 based on the input parameter.
