How to enable editors and authors to UNLOCK files?
System
How would I enable editors and authors to use the UNLOCK menu item? I understand about custom menu items but I'm not quite sure how to extend the access of an existing, out-of-the-box menu item.
Thanks,
Dave

It would not be possible to change the behavior of the current unlock menu item. You would have to create a custom CGI that would execute the iwunlock clt or make a call through openAPI (I am just guessing that you can unlock through openAPI, I have not looked it up.)
If you did create a custom menu item for unlock, you would probably have to impersonate another user that is in the admin/master file.

Hey Interwoven--
If someone created a suite of custom menu items that let authors create Workareas, Branches, do Submits, Publish Editions, and Initiate Workflows, would they still count as "authors" for licensing purposes??? ;-)

WebDeskPro allows Editors (and above) to unlock files
WebDesk allows Authors to unlock files that they themselves have locked.
In what situation (and what version of TeamSite on what platform) have you run into a situation where an Editor cannot access the Unlock menu item?

(a) this *might* be construed as abuse of license
(b) to do this - you would have to "proxy" the operation via a user who *does* have access to do these things, and then you're letting youself in for potential issues along the lines of Authors abusing priveledges that you were kind enough to provide for them.
(c) Authors *may* get more abilities in future versions of TeamSite [this is *not* a promise nor guarantee] - if you have specific use cases that you believe are valid for supporting a specific operation to be able to be run by Authors, please contact Interwoven Support so that they can open up a Feature Request for you.

Oops. I just realized I may have misinterpreted the question....
I answered under the assumption that you would want an author/editor to unlock the files of other people. Is that what you are looking to do?

Any way to let Authors unlock files without using WebDesk?
GodBlessMe
Use iwunlock CLT....

Hi ghoti,
I login as an Editor in WebDeskPro. I found the 'unlock' menu item but I was not able to unlock a file that was locked by another Author (same workarea). So what do I need to do in order to enable an Editor to unlock files?
Thanks.
P.S. I am in TS 5.5.2.

When you were logged in as an editor - were you the owner of the workarea in which you were trying to unlock the file? Or just someone who access to work within the workarea?
I don't have time right now to test this - sorry (contrary to popular belief, I do occasionally sleep and do work for customers ...)

fish,
I guess I know the answer according from your question(??). It sounds like if I am an Editor, I have to be an owner of the workarea in order to unlock a file that is locked by someone else (Author?), right? If that is the case, do you think I can set multiple owners for a workarea?
Thanks!
Adam Stoller
Workareas (and branches, and even files and direcotires) only have one owner. Groups for Sharing can provide some of the capabilities that you're looking for - but I think that locking / unlocking are controlled more at the TeamSite level than at the OS level - and therefore it *may* (again, I haven't tested this) be a limitation of TeamSite that you have to be either the owner of the lock, or the owner of the workarea (or an Administrator or Master) in order to unlock a file held by someone else.
Empirical testing will give you the answers regarding the way things work currently.
