Metadata capture creating additional extended attributes for select fields

I'm trying to understand some seemingly unusual behavior with the metadata capture. It is creating additional extended attributes (EAs) for select fields (only select). These additional EAs have the value of the "real" EA appended to the property name with a value of "y".

This is occurring for all select field types. Text and textarea fields do not exhibit this behavior.

An example of the defined EA and the additional EA:

TeamSite/Metadata/BusinessUnit: My business unit
TeamSite/Metadata/BusinessUnit/My business unit: y

I can't find any reference to this and am curious whether this is standard behavior or whether there is something unusual about our configuration.

We are using TeamSite 6.7.2 SP2.

I think it's a standard behavior. We also have these extra tags in our metadata screen. But I don't know why it is there.
