Quick search advice needed

Version MediaBin 4.6.1 SP1 Build 10
I wonder if anyone could explain whether the following is expected behaviour with MediaBin's Quick Search tool....
We have Quick Search set to search on Keywords and Name. Here's the scenario that is puzzling me:
If an asset has half a dozen keywords assigned to it (all on separate lines) and a user types into the Quick Search a couple of those keywords that are *NOT* adjacent to each other in the list, without using a boolean value like 'AND' then no assets are returned. If, however, they type two words that happen to be adjacent in the keywords list then assets will be returned. So keywords 1 and 2, 4 and 5 etc on the list will give search results, but 1 and 3, 2 and 5 etc will not. For info, if a boolean value ('AND', 'OR etc) is used, then results will always be returned.
Can anyone comment on whether this is to be expected, and why adjacent keywords don't require you to use 'AND', for example?
Many thanks,
Rich

That's expected behavior.
For array type of metadata like Keywords, the array values are concatenated into one text string and then text indexed.
When you perform Quick Search and type in two or more words without logical operators (AND or OR) in between, the search is interpreted as a search for an exact phrase. That's why 1) when you typed in adjacent words, you got back some results; and 2) when you typed in non-adjacent words, you got back nothing.
So, you may want to always place logical operators between search words. Or, you may insert one setting row into the database table MBSettings:
>EXEC AddOrReplaceSettings ‘{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}’, ‘FullTextSearchOperator’, 'AND'
With this setting, a multi-word search will be interpreted as if 'AND' is placed between every two words in the search box.
