Date validation

I have two date fields start date and end date which I want to validate such that end date cannot be lesser than the start date.The dates are in YYYY:MM Smiley Very Happy

D HH:MM

S format.For comparing I first parse the dates using Date.parse() and then compare using .getTime() method.It doesn't work.When I used an alert I get something called NaN.

Please advice.Where I am going wrong?

You should be able to use a regex much faster. You can just compare the fields in order.

S" (is that really colons in the date portion?) - a simple regex-replace and comparison should work - something like:

function compareDates(start, end) {
   var s = start.replace(/[\/: ]/g, ""); // note 'space' included in character set
   var e = end.replace(/[\/: ]/g, ""); // ditto
   /* above should change "2010:03:23 13:32:19" to "20100323133219"
       if that's too large you can always chop off the seconds and even
       the minutes or turn it into a 'real' number
   */
   return (s < e);
}

(note: the above is untested, but should be close to functional if not already functional as-is)
