Teamsite Development similarities

Hello,
I have been searching for a Teamsite developer in the UK for quite a while. I have decided that I will have to broaden my search quite a bit but I am not sure what sort of backgrounds lead well into working with Interwoven / Autonomy products. A good background in PERL is a given but are there similar products available on the market that are easy to transition from or provide a solid background for someone to move from?

(If you're looking for a contracted consultant as opposed to a full-time employee - feel free to send me a private message; I haven't worked in the UK for a while - it was fun)

Basically, you'd want someone with some sort of WCM / CMS background - but as each system has its own way of doing things - having a lot of experience in one system is not necessarily going to mean that they can instantly switch to working within another system; just that they will probably find it easier to get up to speed than someone with no experience whatsoever.

I was really hoping to see what sort of background (other CMS etc) would make it easier to pick up Teamsite. What systems other people have used/developed previously and how easy it was to pick up Teamsite.

I guess it all depends on what you are planning to do with it, what platform it is on and what you did with any previous systems.

Thanks for your input, if anyone else has any other personal stories that they would like to share with us it would be greatly appreciated.

Speaking for myself, personally (how else could I speak for myself? :-) - I started around 1986 with software configuration management systems (SCM) on various Unix platforms (SunOS, IRIX, AOS, Solaris, AIX, HPUX, etc.) that included the basics like RCS, CVS, Perforce, and then went onto ClearCase - which shared some similarities with TeamSite as it too used a virtual file system - at the same time I was doing lots of work with Makefiles, C-code, Perl coding, etc.

I started with Interwoven in 1999 and was able to easily pick up the basics of TeamSite (version management), workflows (process management), and eventually templating (it wasn't difficult, I just spent most of the early years concentrating on workflow development)

Throughout all of this I dabbled with basic HTML, XML, etc. and eventually picked up some Java coding as well.

If you're just concerned with the [old] core TeamSite - that should be sufficient. If you're concerned with the other [newer] aspects of TeamSite (a.k.a. SitePublisher / LiveSite) then you'd probably want to have a stronger background in XSL, Java, JSP, application servers (tomcat, WebSphere, etc.)

I think that trying to find someone who is a master of all is a questionable approach and that it's often better to find several people who are masters of parts of the system but who can work well with each other and overlap as needed to build up a robust and fully functional implementation.

IMHO, word of mouth is still the best way to find resources (been the most successful way I have seen). Often I may know someone at a company who may have little TS experience but has the work ethic and gray matter needed to be successful. Cannot help too much as I know 1 TS guy in the UK

I have been advised from else where that because of the wide variety of skills needed (CSS, Javascript, application servers, PHP/Perl, Java, XML to name but a few) a good place to start would be experience of PHP and Java then teach them teamsite.

what would be your opinion of this?
