It's been a while, but I seem to recall that this is possible - I think you may need to use entitized HTML to set the label for the callout to be an image. Try something like this:

<callout ... label="<img src='...'/>"/>

Once you're within a CGI callout created window - standard HTML and CSS are in play and it has nothing to do with FormsPublisher or FormAPI (though you may still use FormAPI code from within the CGI code to set the values selected back into the DCT). For that, look at things like:

Now you're back to talking about having the image-button within the DCT. I said I wasn't sure about the code - I thought it might do the right thing, but I'll take your word that you did it "correctly" and it didn't work.I'm still sure I remember someone having successfully done something like this, but if that doesn't work I'm not sure what would since you cannot directly imbed '<'s within attribute values that are already contained within an element's '<'s.

Why do I have a weird feeling that he actually used
< callout ... label="

"/ >
and didn't replace the ... with a real source for an image.

You can get part of the way there via custom CSS. You need to determine the class name of the button whose label you want to replace and then provide some custom CSS for the form in question with something like:

#callout_button_18
{
 width: 71px;
 height: 26px;
 margin: 0;
 padding: 0;
 border: 0;
 background: url(/iw-icons/teamsitelogoshadow.gif) no-repeat;
 cursor: pointer;
 text-indent: -1000em;
}

Unfortunately you still have to provide a label attribute with at least a space in it, and that space is on top of the background image, so there's a slight glitch there (see image).
Theoretically you should be able to use something like jquery to replace the entire button HTML area (in my little test case, it was within a table with the id of "callout_button_18") but I wasn't successful in getting that code to work.

That's exactly what I did - via custom CSS for the DCT - though it only worked partially as per my post.
