Archiving Editions safely

Scenario:
In Branch A of store 'default' I wish to migrate old editions to Branch B on separate 'archive' store using iwmigrate. Migrated Editions will be removed from the 'default' store.

Ideally, I'd like to migrate the editions starting with the oldest first i.e INITIAL. The INITIAL edition may be empty or based upon another branch and therefore have content.

Question 1)
Can the INITIAL edition be migrated safely and removed in Branch A or as I was led to believe in the old days (pre TS5.5) the INITIAL edition must always remain ?

If the INITIAL edition can be removed then 2 more questions ...
1a) If I run iwattrib on branch A what will firstedition and rootedition return ?
1b) How can I migrate the INITIAL edition in branch A when the edition named INITIAL already exists by default in Branch B ?

Appreciate in advance any thoughts on the above.

While you can delete the INITIAL edition, you probably shouldn't do so - it's generally an empty edition and is useful for providing a blank canvas - though I don't think there's anything bad that will actually happen in Branch A if you do.

Does Branch B already existing in Store-2?
If so - do you need the content that's there - or are you trying to completely replace it?
Note - the name of the branch (Branch A) that is migrated from the first store ('default') will be used as the name of the target branch (Branch

in the second store - I don't believe you have any control over that.

iwmigrate works based on [at least] three things:

If the above doesn't answer your questions, you'll have to provide more detail about what you are trying to do.

I concur I'll now not be deleting this.

The requirement is a long story but essentially is to archive editions and have them accessible so a process can be built to revert or pull back old versions of files to their source branch.

I was more concerned over the integrity of the source branch if the INITIAL edition or old editions were migrated and then removed in the source branch. I suspect some of the iwattrib elements of a branch may get adversely affected.
e.g. are the firstedition and/or rootedition returned correctly on a branch if INITIAL no longer exists in a branch (but have been archived/moved to into another store) ? I suspect not or at least the the return values are invalid.

At the time of the post I had no access to a Dev server. I now have that and can resolve some concerns I have.

I am actually having issues trying to utilize iwmigrate to port over the editions. Were you able to do this successfully and what process did you use?
