5.5 solutions wf iw_areaowner not returning values

OK, we just got upgraded to 5.5, and I can't get any of the solutions workflows to work, because the value of iw_areaowner isn't being passed. OOTB, my $iw_areaowner = __VALUE__('iw_areaowner'); ... but every time I try to run a workflow, it tells me it can't because there is no owner for the (Author Submit or Default Submit) Workflow, where owner => $iw_areaowner.

Has anyone else run into this problem? What do I do to fix it? All the other iw values are coming in fine. (iw_user, iw_workarea, iw_template_file)

Just to verify - you *are* running these workflow via the Submit button - yes? Not via New Job?
