perl problem

I am about to go lunatic on the perl language. I am looping through a piece of code that passes a filename, then does a regex on the file, extracts a value and returns that value.

However, as my loop continues, it only takes the value that was met in from the first file. I see that it is passing the new file name, but it is not doing the regex or something.

I have been working on this for too long and desperately need help.

Can sopme please look at my attached code????

I can show you the output. Look at the sub for getDcrValue and getMenueItem. For some reason the next file in the array in not been opened and read. Take a look at $meta_names{$key}[2] in the linkVocabs sub. That is all I can really think of...

A couple initial comments:

when you use the syntax:

#array of text file names (menue items on Set Metadata form)
my @txt_files = ("Audience.txt","AZIndex.txt","Cluster.txt","Gateway.txt","LifeEvent.txt","my_vocab_index.txt");
my @vocab_files = ("my_vocab_index.txt","my_vocab_index2.txt","canadalocationlist.txt","categorylist.txt","subcategorylist.txt","typelist.txt");

my %menues = (
Index => ["A-Z Index","Index A à Z",@txt_files[1]],
Audience => ["Audience","Auditoire", @txt_files[0]],
Cluster => ["Cluster","Regroupement",@txt_files[2]],
Gateway => ["Gateway","Passerelle",@txt_files[3]],
Event => ["Life Event","Événement de la vie", @txt_files[4]],
);

do you want to include an array slice into your array with @txt_files[1] or do you only want the second entry in the @txt_files array? If you want the second entry only, use this syntax: $txt_files[1]. Same goes for all the other refernces to individual array elements.

Here is my output file. As you can see for the five trips for the loop, the values from the first file are only being taken. For some reason it is not switching to the next file, next file etc. and doing the regex specified in the if language == 0 statement. There must be something wrong with my code.

I tried the above two things and again was unsuccessful.

Where is "Subject = " getting printed out? You really need to put some debug statements into this code in order to debug this properly. This is not very well written code and it requires some time on your part to throw some print statements in there that will help you resolve all the issues. I doubt there's only one problem with this code. Take some time to clean it up and isolate the problem.

You've got some pretty horrendous code in there. For instance - within GetDcrValue ...
...
my $l = 0;
...
#read lines into hash
while () {
$line = $_;
push @lines, $line;
}
...
$line = @lines[$l];
$line =~ /(.*)\|(.*)\|(.*)\|(.*)/;
...

For starters, the comment says you're reading lines into a hash, but it's an array, and the code you're using is terribly inefficient (read this Tech Doc for more details)

Next, as Smitty mentioned, you are using an array slice syntax to reference a single element within the array (@lines[$l] should be $lines[$l] - at least until Perl 5.8 which I think may have changed this rule)

Then, you are using and un-conditional / un-bounded wild-card regular expressions to parse the text and assuming that it is doing what you want. I suggest you create a little sample script like so:


my $line = "this|is|a|test|case";
$line =~ /(.*)\|(.*)\|(.*)\|(.*)/;
print "($1)($2)($3)($4)\n";

I seriously doubt you're getting what you think you are.

Perl is a wonderful scripting language - unless you don't know how to code in it....

I have everything running nicely. Except the script will not operate properly when called from automated worklfow (i.e. select files(s), submit, select template, run job). But it does run properly from the command line.

I;m at my wits end on this one :-(

Does anyone know how I might be able to achieve the following...

I want to set extended attributes on a DCR throught a script. Essentially the Extended Attributes will be set on one file, either enlgish or french, then the matching value in the other language will be found and set on the corresponding DCR is another language. I have this working nicely, but if multiple extended attributes exist for one Teamsite/Metadat/.... name, then only the first one is picked up. I need a way of pushing all the values into an array or something.

Any ideas on this one? The script is attached to this post - but it is a little long..

An extended attribute takes a single string value (per file version). If you want to store multiple values, you could (1) use multiple extended attributes (ex. "region_1", "region_2", ...), or (2) encode the multiple values into a single string. The easiest way to encode values into a string is to use some character as a delimiter; for example, comma-separated values. Of course, you need to ensure that the delimiter is not confused with any character within a value. A more sophisticated way to store multiple values in a string would be to create a small XML document.
