Catching MB import errors

I was wondering what is the best way to trap the MediaBin import errors during generation of the pages in TeamSite. Currently, if there is any problem with the import operation, the user is shown a PT compiler error. This message doesn't make any sense at all in the context of an import related error.

One possible option is to check the existence of the asset in MediaBin beforehand (using its Webservice interface) each time before triggering an import. But this seems to be a very heavy process to do for every image/flash on the DCR and probably will impact the performance of the template.

Can anyone suggest the best practice in trapping this error and showing a more meaningful message to the end users?
