Return code

Hi,

I want to use iwregen command .I am using like this
$iwhome = TeamSite::Config::iwgethome();
$iwregen = $iwhome/bin/iwregen;
`$iwregen $vapth`;

$vpath is entire filename

Just i want to know return value of above command. Any body have suggestion about this.

two things:

my $output = `$iwregen $vapth 2>&1`;
my $return = $?;

This will capture any output sent to stdout/stderr in $output and capture the return code (if any) in $return.

Try this:
$iwhome = TeamSite::Config::iwgethome();
$iwregen = $iwhome/bin/iwregen;

my $result = qx|$iwregen $vapth|;

And then try printing the value of "result" variable.

Is there any result being returned? Are you sure that it is even getting to the point where it tries to run iwregen (is the check to find the generated file via iwextattr working correctly)?

Thanx for your reply.It is always returning 0.and it is not returning any thing in my $regen that is the reason it is returning 0.

ok, I think I see some flawed logic (not entirely sure, but it is worth a look). a return code of "0" means that the clt completed with no error. There are some problems on windows however since sometimes you will get a return code from a CLT in perl of "0" even when there was an error returned on the command line.

You're logic is looking for the opposite. If there are no problems with running the command the correct return code would be "0" and the response on the command line would be blank (it only prints something out if there was a problem of some sort). Your code does:

The return value in $regen will either be a blank line or an error message returned from STDERR or STDOUT. If you are getting nothing when you print out regen then chances are the command is working, but your check to see if it is empty or not is not good.

U are right.Actually it is returning '0' always. Eventhough teamsite File->Regenerate is showing error. But still above code showing return code 0.So i feel some bug is there in the code.

that would indicate then that the regen completed with no problems then. if you look at the file that was supposed to be regened by the script was it modified?

You mentioned that if you tried to run the regeneration from the TS gui you got some sort of error? What sort of error.

What happens if you print out "$iwgen $vpath" and then try to run the same command from the command line? Do you get an error or does the prompt just return with no message (if it returns with no message then I would bet that everything is running just fine).

iwregen always returning '0' is a known bug (# 34212) - Contact Interwoven Support to request they add your company as an "interested customer" for tracking.

Also - please note, that if the resultant file of iwregen is identical to that of the existing file, it will not overwrite the existing file (this is a feature, not a bug).

Do you know the process Teamsite uses to determine if the resultant iwgen file is identical to the existing file? Is it doing a comparison on size? date? etc.

Also, do you know if there is an iwregen option/flag that, when set, specifically overwrites an existing file (therefore not dependant if the files are identical)?

I don't know what algorithm it uses, and I don't know of an option to override it.

Yes we have found that the CLT iwregen behaves differently depending *what* you change in the TPL. For instance,

The DCR remains unchanged, make an HTML modification in the TPL, issue a iwregen and the output is correctly regenerated.

However, in the same above scenario if you make a change in the way the TPL processes information, within the <iw_perl> tags, issue a iwregen then the output is not regenerated.

It’s as though iwregen ignores certain changes but recognizes others.

Anyone else ever experience this?

iwregen only rewrites the file if regenerating the file results in changes to the file content. Therefore, if the Perl logic in your presentation template changes, but if it results in the same output, then the file will *not* be rewritten.

You can think of it this way:

* iwregen regenerates the file to a temporary location.
* It compares the temp file to the current file.
* If, and only if, the two files are different, then the temporary file is copied over the original file.

This behavior is consistent with the iwpt_compile.ipl flag "-smartwrite":


  -smartwrite       Optional flag.

                   When this flag is specified, before iwpt_compile.ipl
                   or <iw_ostream> (see TeamSite:T::iw_ostream) writes
                   a generated page to disk,  a check is made to see if
                   the file is already present on disk.

                   If the file is already present, and the contents of
                   the page about to be written are identical to the
                   file, the file currently on disk is not modified.

                   This option prevents the recompilation of a template
                   from creating "new versions" of files that only differ
                   in modification date.

Well after further examination I have come to the following conclusion:
When I run regen on a directory with a script crawling all files, only those that I have made an actual textual change to are regenerated. I changed some of the generated html such as stylesheet and menu options but it refused to regen all of the files, only those with textual changes are being regenerated. TS 5.52 sp1 on Win2k.
It could be my script...all I do know is when I want to do a total regen I delete the files and do an iwgen instead with the options I want. This worked perfectly for me in 5.01sp2 but works differently or doesn't work in 5.52.

So are there any alternatives out there at all? Has the bug been fixed? Is there anyway to get anything other than a "0" back from iwregen?

When I choose File-->Regenerate File from the TS gui, it tells me "Could not output file" (permissions problems).
Yet when I run iwregen on the same file at the command line, it returns "0" (and does nothing to the file).

Any suggestions?

The bug is not yet fixed. I asked that it be fixed for the next SP, which will likely by SP4.

I just joined a project that has been in production for about 3 years. The backing store size is out of control (30GB on tape, 60GB on disk) for a relatively small group of sites - so large that they cannot iwfsck in production and the admins are concerned over disk space.

There are processes (don't know how many yet - apparently one per branch) that regenerate every page on the site every night. They do not appear to use -smartwrite, and the client thinks this is because data outside of the DCR which is pulled in by the TPL has changed. It sounds like the client is misinformed - the datestamp of the DCR and TPL are not checked before generation (my guess at their assumption of Interwoven's logic), but the actual content generated is compared against the existing content after compilation. Can you confirm this?

Instead of modifying all these processes, is there anyway to get iwpt_compile.ipl to always act like it had been called with -smartwrite? Then hopefully I could explicitly force overwrite with -dumbwrite.

Other than for potential permission changes I don't see any reason to ever not use -smartwrite - what would be some of the cases where -smartwrite would not be desirable?

Also, are these excess versions created by iwpt_compile.ipl the kind of thing that iwfsshrink would clean up? And would iwgen/iwregen use -smartwrite or not?

iwserver: 5.5.2 Build 20638 Interwoven 20030604 on Windows 2000.

I am not the admin, but they did mention that they have been trying to run iwfsshrink - not sure if that was a success or not.
