trying to set value of a textarea from CGI

Hi All,

I am trying to set the value(value contains a new line) of a Textarea field from the CGI but its giving me an error saying "Unterminated String Constant" .

print "api.IWDatacapture.getItem(\"/item_name\").setValue(\"$var\");\n";

where $var is having some value as " test
next line "

Can anyone help me out .

It's likely that your $var contains a double quote or backslash character, which is breaking the string. Try this: (the qq notation is purely to keep your fellow developers sane)

$var =~ s/\\/\\\\/g;
$var =~ s/"/\\"/g;
print qq|api.IWDatacapture.getItem("/item_name").setValue("$var");\n|;

i tried that but no luck .....actually the thing si that $var is having a value something like "test(after that \n by pressing Enter) nad then some value . so the match is not able to find any backslash character .

Your CGI spits out invalid JS code, something like

api.IWDatacapture.getItem("/item_name").setValue("test
next line");

Modify a little:
$var =~ s|\n|\\n|msg;
print qq(api.IWDatacapture.getItem("/item_name").setValue("$var");\n);
