Word's Document.Close not getting checked back in

Has anyone else seen the following behavior:

We have a client that is using a procedure with Document.Close method in it. For most of their documents, the file is checked back in/unlocked after it is closed. However they have several documents that remain checked out after the Close method is run against them.
