Custom Layout xsl:variable Problem

Hi All,
We are using teamsite 6.7.2 and livesite 3.1. We have created a custom layout xsl. In this layout I am trying to assign the sitename to a xsl variable like below:
[<xsl:variable name="currentLanguage">$CONTEXT{site.name}</xsl:variable>
But instead of taking the exact value (which is 'en' for this case)it is making the variable value '$CONTEXT{site.name}'. I need to use this sitename in many places in the layout xsl. What can be the reason for that incorrect assignment?
