How could I set this up so I set up the "somevalues" as variable I can extract from this lines of xml..

To be clear, what you have displayed is XML, not a regex. Are you asking for a regex to isolate the "somevalue" part of this sequence of XML? Or are you asking for something else?

First and foremost: Are you sure that this entire string will always be in this exact format (one line, no CDATA sections)? If not, then I would recommend that you use a bona fide XML parser.

Secondly, if you're going to be doing much more Perl programming in your lifetime, I would recommend that you spend some time learning about regular expressions, since they are so fundamental to most Perl developers. The regex for which you are looking is a pretty easy one.

Here's an untested guess:


my $your_string = ...;
$your_string =~ /<vocab>(.*)<\/vocab><code>(.*)<\/code><label>(.*)<\/label>/;
my ($vocab, $code, $label) = ($1, $2, $3);

Would anyone know where to start on a REGEX that would take the following string

CAT_E::38947483873

and separate it into

CAT_E (i.e. $1) and 38947483873 ($2), making sure that the "::" is also dropped.

an easy way would be to use a split

($1,$2) = split("::",$value_to_be_split);

just a guess off the top of my head - hope it works.

Don't use $1 and $2 for the lhs of assignments - not adviseable (if even legal).

If you want to make sure you only split on the first occurrance of "::" - do:

my ($f1, $f2) = split(/::/, $string_to_split, 2);

I have a regex that I cannot figure out at all, I need some help from the pros on this one.

my string goes,

some value could be any thing(followed by a bunch of whitespace), one whitespace followed by another value.

So to visualize this one

there is a values immediately followed by a certain amount of whitespace then a comma one white space and another value

what I have so far is value =~ m|^(.*)((\t)*,)(\t)($.*)|)

I am definitely missing something, but I am not sure what...

That is not even close. I recommend purchasing the book Mastering Regular Expressions, published by O'Reilly. If you are developing scripts, you really need to get some training instead of expecting people to do your work for you. The book that I mentioned is excellent and will give you everything from the basics of regular expressions all the way to the most complex stuff. I am sure someone will provide you with the regex that solves your immediate problem. However it's up to you to learn how to do this type of thing on your own.

All,
Is there a way to build a regex that will count occurances of something in a string, and do something to the first occurance and the last occurance.

For example, I have

(<vocab>CREATOR-F</vocab>) occur several times in a string. What is the syntax for counting occurances and doing something to the first and last occurance.

Not sure if it is even possible, just searching for ideas.

A quick one. If you have a requirement of substituting only the first and last occurances in your string, why don't you try using "^" and "$" with your regex?
"^" will look from start of the string and "$" at the end.
