Retrieving XML content using LSCS

Hello,
I'm using the getDocumentList external of LSCS to retrieve a list of items from LSCS, and I'm passing the withcontent parameter to make use of the XML content. The problem is that the content comes back in a format that's not useful for my XSL. All xml elements are replaced with < and the xsl does not recognize it as a valid xml that we can parse.
Does anybody have a better way of doing this?
