Usage of mht (mhtml) files in CMS...

Hi guys,

This is my first post, and I'm not very experienced at web stuff - so please go easy one me.

I am using the Interwoven CMS (which I lebieve to be Teamsite) to create a page that contains a link to a mht document - just to test whether I can open the mht file successfully.

I've tried 2 methods, one where I highlight the text and simply create the link by selecting the link icon and entering the file details, and another method where I type in the html (i.e. using href syntax) directly, and neither works.

The mht file displays as text in the browser, including binary content as gobbledygook.

Does anyone have any idea how I can get the mht file to display correctly?

Note my desktop has Windows 7 and IE8 installed - I've alse seen the exact same results on Firefox 3.6.

MHTML MIME Encapsulation of Aggregate HTML Documents[/indent]Or it could be something else.

In either case - the browser will only render it correctly if the web server understands the extension - which is a MIME type setting on the web server - not TeamSite or TeamSite's iwwebd - but rather the "customer web server" associated with TeamSite (for preview) and the target web server where these files are to be deployed (presumably).

So, it sounds like you need to talk to your local web-server guru and have them configure the "customer web server" on the TeamSite server (and your actual web servers wherever they may be) to properly understand what application or rendering mechanism is needed for .mht files.

Thanks for the reply. Although it seems you put far too much effort into looking for elaborations on the acronym! I suppose Google was very helpful with that.

I can open the file when I have it saved locally, but I guess you are suggesting that's because it's not coming via the web server, and if it were (regardless of whether teamsite is involved), I'd be experiencing the same problem.

But your response seems helpful nonetheless, so thank you! I'll do as you suggest and discuss with the relevant people.

Is the link a web address or a local one?

Does the mht file open correctly when it is opened directly?

While I agree that Ghoti has a flair for the dramatic. He did allude to the answer. Basically, the TeamSite admin needs to go on the server and add a mime type to the web server settings, although this is only needed if you are using your TeamSite server for preview purposes as well as content creation. The web server that servers up the files outside of TeamSite is where you really need to add the mapping.

Here is a list of common file extensions and their mime types.

Adding this mime map in the web server will tell the server what mime type to send to the users browser so that the browser can figure out how to open it or with which app to open it with.

Thanks to you all for the replies.

One thing I failed to test was to publish the webpage to the production environment and try it there, that would tell me if the changes need to be made in both areas.

In any case, I've passed your replies onto the relevant people who will (hopefully) use this information to solve the problem for me.
