How to stop or start Search then Index services

Actually I'm getting the following error when I try to configure and restart the search.

TeamSite Search indexing error -TeamSite Code :5000023

When I search some article in order to solve this I got the following instruction,

1. Stop the Search then Index services.
2. Go to your collection folder and you will find a file called branches.db.
3. Delete branches.db – It will be created again on restart of the index service (Note: a new branches.db file will only be recreate, when a new branch is added to branches.cfg file and Stop iw.tssearch and iw.tsindex and Start iw.tsindex and iw.tssearch )
4. Re-start the Index then Search services.

I'm little bit confused in re-starting the Search services, and the information given in Note.

You may also have to remove the contents of your iw-search-index directory. Look in search.properties to find the location.

Yesterday, I had a similar problem. Deleted the branches.db, deleted the contents of iw-search-index. Restarted iw.tsindex and iw.tssearch... nuthin. the branches.db wouldn't appear and the indexer seemed to hang - based on log files...

Eventually I rebooted the vm and it came back up. VM is RHEL5.3 IW-Search 3.1.1

Sometimes the search DB gets into a bad state. Then you need to remove the DB and regenerate them.

to stop (as root)

/etc/init.d/iw.tsindex stop
/etc/init.d/iw.tssearch stop

to start

/etc/init.d/iw.tsindex start
/etc/init.d/iw.tssearch start

if you are running 3.1.1 you also have iw.idol server (/etc/init.d/iw.idol stop|start). you should stop search in this order iw.tssearch stop > iw.tsindex stop > iw.idol stop and start it in the opposite direction.
if you are troubleshooting index manager issues, then dont worry about starting up search manager, just work with idol and index manager till you resolve the issue then start the search manager.

if you are still having issues post your log/iw.tsindex.log
