Changing Asset Type
ntaylor
Does anyone know if it is possible to change an image's asset type after it is inserted into MediaBin? When we converted to MediaBin and ran a custom import, it looks like many assets where inserted as Camera Raw asset type when they should have been tiff asset type. Is there any way to do this without actually removing the asset and uploading it again?
Using MediaBin 4.6.2.
Thanks in advance.

The simplest answer to this is "no". There are metadata fields related to the Asset Type that need to be changed as well. If there are too many assets to make reingestion feasible there may be things that can be done at the database level but reingestion would be far cleaner.

Thank you for the feedback. We have about 4000 assets that would need to be reingested. Looks like we will have to perform this at the database level instead.

Done reingest - it's a waste of time! We had the same raw camera problem with around 9,000 assets. IWOV support was able to give us a script to fix the meta and a patch for the misidentification problem. Let me know if you need the case number.

In regards to asset type this field does not correspond to "Type" as described in the Dublin Core standard (dc.type = collection, dataset, event, image, interactive resource, moving image etc.). The string values in this list really refer to "File Type" as opposed to Asset type. There is also Taxonomy confusion here as "BMP" is indeed a file type but "Photoshop" is an application name, consistently the value should be "PSD".
Is this rectified in later versions (we are using 4.5.3)?

No, Asset Type is not extracted from the IPTC fields. It is a purely internal field used by MediaBin to identify the file type. There are cases in which there have been overlaps. For example every "Photoshop EPS" file is by its nature a valid "Vector EPS" file.
The names were determined by Product Marketing for ease of use. Again this field is for internal use and does not live inside the file.

This is not a call for extraction from the IPTC as the IPTC does not give this information. This is a call for the field to correspond with proper metadata standards. Dublin Core states that for something to be a value of "type" the values must be. dc.type = collection, dataset, event, image, interactive resource, moving image etc. The field should be renamed and un-blended to better correspond with what the value is describing such as "Application Name" and "File extension". It think ease of use is better when field values are more accurate and follow an industry standard.
