Development and Production

Bieng the CMS manager here it's hard for me to decided where to have our development team do development work.

We have an IW TS license for a production box and a development box. But it is hard for me to swallow to have people do development work on a dev box and then have them move all that work to Production. I mean it's not like the front end we are touching. If CMS goes down or burbs the content contributors just have to wait an hour until we restart right?

Can anyone out there tell me what they do as far as developing TS?

We have a development system, a QA system and a production system. We have scripts to move the code from one machine to another. I think small templating tweaks can be made on production, but for foundation stuff (like the custom Java packages) we enforce and engineering build process. We keep release notes so we know what is going into each production build. It works pretty well and is not too much trouble because of the script. Production builds are done when there are no users on the system or after notification has been sent to all users.

If you're "developing" some configuration changes that end up corrupting iw.cfg or all your *.uid files or something like that, are you sure it'll only be "an hour" before you get your CMS back?

A large part of any answer to your question obviously depends on your specific situation. How many people do you anticipate developing for your CMS? 1-2? or 5-10? How bad would it be if your CMS was down for 24 hours? 48 hours?

I would recommend setting up the Dev environment regardless, because they're extremely useful for testing patches, LDAP integration, and showing demos. Not to mention the all-important code & release cycle.

I wouldn't go so far as to advocate a separate QA environment between your IWOV Dev and IWOV Prod boxes, but I can personally vouch that my Dev environment has saved my bacon on several occasions.

I am going to enfore that code (except for minor tweaks) be done on our dev box.
