Trick to quickly run/test java-code?

Hi,

if I develop some java-code (class, servlet, jsp, etc) that must go through make_toolkit.ipl to be installed on the iwservlet I have to wait at min. 5 minutes before I can test my code. First the iw-build runs for 3 minutes and then iwservletd takes 5 minutes or so to start and load all apps (LiveSite has NOT made this any faster, taking 80% of this time :-((((( ).

Is there a trick/approach/practice to prevent this and be able to quickly test/run/debug your new java-code without having to run build-toolkit?

1) Use JUnit and test your Java classes within your IDE
2) Use a local VM and/or dedicated "messing around" TS box, and edit the webapp files directly in iw-home/httpd/webapps/content-center, then you only need to bounce the iwservletd service and occasionally clear out the compiled jsps in the iw-home/servletd/conf/localhost/Catalina (or something like it..).

Note #1: Assumes TS7.1 or earlier. Item 2) isn't quite the same with JBoss.
Note #2: Do NOT do item 2) on a real dev server. You're just asking for trouble if you mess with files and then forget to bring them back into the UITK folders.

Jboss will reload the webapp if your 'touch' the web.xml. This is a huge performance gain because it just reloads the webapp of that web.xml and thus not the full stack of webapps. A perl script that will set the mod-date of the file will automate the trick.

However I can't remember whether you had to modify some 'reload' property in some config file. Maybe best if you simply try it out and if it fails search within the jboss config for some reload-property..

Touching the web.xml leads to 404 error..

Yes, you're right
But JSPs are not reloaded, may be I miss the property you're speaking about..
I will try to find out it

For jsp to reload you must empty the temp-directory in which they compiled. Somewhere under the jboss/work folder I believe. Once they can not be found there jboss will re-compile them
