Size limits/issues with the _dd.cfg files?

Over the past few weeks the section responsible for template design and implementation have reviewed our successful pilot projects input and output templates with a view to simplifying their number and reducing the maintenance overhead.
The team have managed to reduce the number of templates to 3 main "flexible types" compared to the 14 or so specific types we have currently.
The old style datacapture.cfg files averaged around 8kb and the resulting _dd.cfg around 40kb, or so.
The new style datacapture.cfg files average around 55kb and generate _dd.cfg files of between 700kb - 1.6Mb in size.

Are there known practical limitations/disadvantages to this approach?

We would save a great deal of time and effort on template maintenance but I am concerned that we may be sacrificing system performance to achieve this aim.
