regex issue

Hi,

the core goal was to replace a specific field option in around 1000 dcr's based on entries in an excel sheet,i am able to get the values from excel sheet and apply some conditional statements ,the problem is that regex for matching the path doesnt work ,may be i am missing something simple here ,i am putting the same dcr xml and regex code below

DCR XML PART:-
[php]

http://www.yahoo.com

[/php]

REGEX CODE:-(if it works then i can easily replace $3 with value collected from excel sheet
[php]
if($line=~/(.*)(\s*)(.*)(<\/value>)(.*)/)

[/php]

it doesnt print any test print statements kept inside the loop

the control enters the if loop and prints test statements if i do regex like this
but then the value field trapping doesnt work
[php]
if($line=~/(.*)()(.*)/)
[/php]

it seems like some multiline regex issue ,i searched on google but couldnt really get it working

Looking forward for some guidance from experts?

I don't have my regex book with me but I don't think \s matches newline chars. Only whitespace. I could be wrong...

It would help to know more about the surrounding processing code. You use a variable called

$line

which implies that you're processing the XML line-by-line, however you cannot be assured that the entire pattern you are searching for exists in one captured line - instead, you might be better off slurping the entire contents of the XML and then applying your regex's to that:

open(IN, '<', $dcr) || die " $dcr ($!)";
my $xml = do {local $/; <IN>};
close(IN);

Then, as Smitty indicated, you may need to explicitly include newlines in your pattern, and you will probably want to use the 'sm' modifiers, and possibly the 'g' modifier as well - e.g.:

...
if ($xml =~ m|([.\n]*)(<item name="pdf_link">[\s\n]*<value>)([.\n]*)(</value>)([.\n]*)|sm) {
    ...
}
