error in TPL compiling

When I am trying to see preview of a DCR using a TPL, I get error message

"An error occurred during PT compiling. Please see more details in log files."

I read other posts and it says this may be permissions error.
I may not have permission to write to file.
1) My confusion is, while previewing where do I need to write to a file ? Does previewing mean, writing output to new file and displaying it ?
2) What permissions do I need to modify, if its permissions issue ?
3) I dont have access to TS server but I can check log files. how can I check if I have permissions issue ? What does it say in servletd_out.log file, if I have permisssions issue ?

1) You need to be allowed to write to the workarea. Also note that the TPL engine doesn't work with non-OS users.
2) See #1
3) The log file you want to be checking is iwutild_out.log. That's where you'll find (rather cryptic) error messages.

I find that manually compiling the templates using iwpt_compile.ipl is often a more useful debugging technique, but you do need access to the server itself for that.
