Permission Error Message When Trying to Pick Up Review Task in Workflow

System

We have a workflow:

TeamSite 7.1
Windows 2008
Workflow Model (not a WFT)

There is a review task that we have modeled as a group task, which is assigned to a group at workflow instantiation.

If I log in as the reviewer and navigate to the task, a message is displayed

You do not have permission to work on this task.

. However:

• The "Take" button is displayed
  
• I am able to take ownership of the task and transition it
  

The user has a custom role for the branch in question, which has the following privileges:

I have encountered this issue before with TeamSite 6.7.2, but can't remember how we resolved it.

Does anyone have any insights on what else I should look at?

Call it a glitch in the UI or a training issue. You really don't have permission to work on the task until you take ownership of it. It has nothing to do with custom roles, as I've seen the same situation happen with OOTB roles on TS 7.1. If there's a way to get rid of that message for users that have access to take the task, I haven't seen it.
