multiple options in view mode

I have this situation.

I have two fields
country and provinces.

When a country is selected from a drop down menu, provinces in that country are available as options in next drop doen menu.

I have colllection of 5 countries in first drop down menu and one set of provinces for each country.
I have setVisible(true) for a set of provinces for a selected country and others are setVisible(false).

This works fins in edit mode. But in the view mode, first option from each set of provinces is visible. While only for the country selected in country options dropdown, options for provinces shd be visible.

I thinks, its because formAPI is disabled in view mode.

If I want only selected country and first option from the list of options available for that country be visible, what should I do ?

Your thinking is correct - unless you can figure out a way to do what you want without the use of any java script - there really isn't anything you can do.

An inline won't work because that runs before the DCR data is loaded, so it won't know which entry was selected in the first list to determine what to show in the second list.

A callout won't work because it won't be active in view mode.

And, as you've already figured out - the use of callServer() is not an option since FormAPI / javascript code will not be run in view mode.

Within your schema there is nothing you can do, I'll second Ghoti on that opinion.
If however you are ready to change it you may have few options...

For example, you can remove drop-downs from DCT completely. Set two read-only text items
and populate them with the callout that renders desired drop-downs. Although this is not
exactly the GUI you've described it is easy to code and it will work correctly in both Edit
and read-only mode.

Alternatively, you may consider something like the following. This method will require more
(and more elaborated) coding.

1. Instead of six, make only two drop-downs, Countries and provinces. Original DCT item
for provinces should contain fused list of all provinces, coded in DCT or coming from
inline, regardless.

2. Make sure that provinces have unique Values even if Labels are identical (Georgia in the
US and Georgia in Caucasus and the like).

#1 and #2 together will automatically take care of the View mode.

3. In Edit mode you'd use onItemChange Event for the Countries drop-down to modify (toggle)
available options of the Provinces and that's it.

4. Finally, onInit you'd check Country/Province Value for the existing DCR and modify initial
set of provinces accordingly (right set with one option selected)
