Running teamsite as non-root

i am planning to install teamsite 672 sp2 on solaris 10 soon.

Our unix admin asked if we really need to install teamsite and run teamsite as root. My answer to the install piece was yes.. you have to be root to install teamsite. however running teamsite as root i was not quite sure about it .As far as i know iwwebd and iwservletd run as iwui, and iwproxy only needs to run as root.

so the question here is can we run teamsite as non root. if yes what are advantages and disadvantages of doing so.

please feel free to correct if am wrong in anything.

I believe that 6.7.2 requires root to install, but then will run as the iwts user.

We're going through a similar exercise now: installing TS 7.1 on an environment where we don't have root access, so we're having to open tickets for doing anything. In the long run, I think it'll be a worthwhile effort.

Teamsite installation definitely require root access, since it (the process) does lot of system activities which is easily done by root. Don't experiment with non-root it is disaster.

Simple example : to install a simple software (eg: Yahoo Msngr) the installer looks for admin access which means its a universal recommendation to install any good application with the owner of the system.

Interwoven does not even support installing via sudo (they want real root access), but I have installed it with sudo successfully. The odds of neither root or sudo are slim.

Thanks Nipper - I should qualify my comment from before. We're installing 7.1, but I no longer have access to root access, so I have to work with the hosting engineers that do have root. So it's being installed by the root user, just not by me.

I hope you are hanging out with them and have some time to kill. There is a lot of hurry up and wait in the 7.1 install.

Be certain that X windows libraries are loaded (even if you are doing a command line install).

Also, you need to run the installer multiple times, each time it will tell you what it can install and do that one. Once one it complete, the objects that were dependent on it can be installed.

2. In UNIX if for an account I do 'sudo su -' I can switch to root account. Will this work while installing TS and recommended?

I'll take a stab at responding:

value associated with the account you use to run commands - if it's 0027 you're likely to run into problems, better to set it to something like 0022.
