Upgrade question...common services?

Im upgrading from teamsite 6.7.2sp2 to 7.2 on one of my servers. I chose to use the upgrade option. The install program im running is:
IWOVInstaller-Windows-7.2.0.0.0.exe

Right off the bat it asks me if I want to install common services on another machine, or this machine or skip it. Im not sure what or where common services would be with my current version. Is there a way to check in any config file?

Common services is new as of 7.x - so you don't have it in your current version.

Ghoti...What are the ramifications if I should choose not to install them or if I install them on the same machine? I dont have a remote machine to put them on. It appears that the only thing I can do is skip it because if you choose install on the same machine it asks you to find the common services which I cannot find so im not real sure what to do...but I am thinking I will skip the common services ie runtime only.

You cannot go on without installing them.

From what I can tell Common Services is a lightweight app, so putting it on the TS server is not an issue. It is designed that you can share a common services app.

Ok but why does it give me the option to skip then? Also if I do choose to install them the next screen offers me the option to do a FIND but if I dont have them in the past there is nothing to FIND? Translation...how do I get past that screen? Please see attachment.

You may want to talk to support about this. I have installed 7.2 new but not an upgrade.

FYI: I have not performed the installation of 7.x yet. Below is from "Web Solutions Authoring Components Installation Guide"

Common Services. The infrastructure component used by ReportCenter, TeamSite, and Administration Console for authentication and configuration information. Many or all of the functionality of various components fail without this component. Hence, after you install this component, verify that it is installed successfully and works correctly. Common Services depends upon Application Container component.

Interwoven Registry, User, and Config Services are termed as Common Services in TeamSite.

Installing Common Services and Common Services Client is mandatory for the installation to proceed.

If you select Skip, only runtime applications will be installed, upgraded/reinstalled, or uninstalled option, the installer skips Common Services and other dependent components. Use this option if you want only runtime components such as LiveSite Display Services. Runtime components do not depend on Common Services.

I will talk to support because this doesnt make any sense its not in the pdf installation manual.

We only use Teamsite and OpenDeploy/DataDeploy no add ons like Livepublisher, sitepublisher, etc.

Seems to me that I must have not downloaded the package for common services. See attachment. Thats the only thing I can come up with here.
This is a new install then and im worried about all my configs getting blown away.

That is correct. You need that file (in the same location as the installer) if you want to get very far at all.

Ok so I download the 1.2 meg iwpkg file and it turns into a zip file?

Now teamsite installer doesnt allow me to pick it. Because it is no longer iwpkg. Confused.

hey! Have you read the 7.2 installation guide?

euhm, in short, IWOVInstaller-Windows-7.2.0.0.0.exe (~70MB) does nearly nothing by itself... it's a generic installer, an empty shell.

it requires .iwpkg files, which contain the real stuff to install (like Microsoft's MSI packages - but simpler).

In your case, you need the 1.2 GB (not meg) teamsite.iwpkg that you circled on the screenshot.

This iwpkg contains TeamSite, but also the common services etc.

If you can do a fresh install, I think that will be easier than an upgrade install. Note that 7.2 is the first TS version to drop the traditional "iwservletd". There's a (new) iwjbossd that hosts almost a dozen webapps (including iw-cc, eventsubsystem, etc)

EDIT:
and yes, the .iwpkg files are in effect ZIP files. You can unzip them and look at the contents. If you downloaded it and your browser gave it a .zip extension, then change the extension back to .iwpkg. Put it in the same folder as the IWOVInstaller-Windows-7.2.0.0.0.exe file, an it will be detected automatically

Now that Ive gotten past the package issue.

I get to the screen that shows which common services to install. Please see attachments. One screenshot is from the guide and the other is the screenshot I get of the page that shows which services to install. You will notice that there is a difference. The guide shows Admin Console as an option. I dont have the Admin Console option. Im worried that I wont have an admin console. Can someone explain what id be facing if I go through with this. I chose the UPGRADE option because i want all our config settings db connections ports etc to keep from getting overwritten.

Again read old posts about 7.1

The install is a very iterative process. You will run the installer multiple times. Each time you install one item, which is a dependency for another, when you run it the next time the 2nd item is available for install.
