OpenCmd Command Crashes External Application when Opening Office Files

Hello
I have a solution on vb6 that uses the opencmd command to open a file from worksite, and launch the associated applications.
Works well with adobe files , but when I open office files eg Wordx, the following occurs.

- Associated file opens correctly, with document checked out, which is correct behaviour.
BUT if the application that launched the opencmd command is left unused for a period of time, eg 20 minutes, windows crashes with a memory error.

Any suggestions?
