save dcr in a subfolder of data

Hi,

I have a req to save the dcr in the folder below the data folder.Say if there is a template type "Article".The dcr should be saved in the directories inside data folder Article/data/carrers/foo.dcr.For now I am using Filename Field to get the name of the dcr.But how can I get the path.

should the user have to manually enter the path say in the Filename field carrers/foo?

How can the user know.what folders are present in the data folder.I refered to many threads..which say if there is no folder create a folder on fly.But how does the user first enter the path?Does he manually enter say "temp/foo" in filename field then there is no foo so create a folder temp pn fly?How can i get the folders below data?

you need to make your requirements concise. Those are a mess.

You will need to do some call server with the formapi to see if the folder exists and to create it if not. How you determine what the path should be is a business decision and up to you

To see if the folder exists..I need to know the folder name..Where do i get this folder name from?

I refered to one of the threads which says

Generally, what I try to do with DCTs is add the appropriate FormAPI code (including callServer code) to programmatically name the DCR and generated file based on one or more fields of data captured within the DCT - included in that naming is the relative-path information which is used both within the data/ directory (for the DCR) and relative to the root of the workarea (or some static directory therein) for the output file.

For example - if I have a DCT that contains a drop-down field:
Ads
News
About
...
(from which I select "Ads") and a title field ("Yadda yadda yadda") - then when I save the DCR, I'd save it as:
/templatedata/category/datatype/data/advertisements/yadda_yadda_yadda.xml
and the output file would be:
/.../WORKAREA/****/advertisements/yadda_yadda_yadda.html
or
/.../WORKAREA/****/content/advertisements/yadda_yadda_yadda.html

By doing it this way - the user clicks Save or Generate and neither operation prompts for a location.

If i understood u correctly, i think even i am doing something similar in my code. But not to get the path of data, instead to get the path of the output file.I think giving in a cgi-callout button called "browse" and calling the following code on click of that button would solve your purpose:

FWIW - when I do this kind of thing, I base the sub-directory path on other information that is either available within the DCT or within the environment. For example:

The name of the file is usually derived from some other field(s) within the DCT - like a "title" field or some such - where I take the string entered, remove most punctuation (leaving things like '-', '_', '.') and replace all white-space with underscores - and then slap on a ".xml" at the end.

echoing Adam, the folder structure must be dictated by the business and website structure and not the CMS or guys on DevNet.

You need to determine what the final URL of the page would be and mimic that under .../data/

How ? Well that depends on your site. Often I use a navigation DCR that set ups the main navigation. I use that to feed a select list in other DCTs where you choose the parent of the page you are creating (or you can say I am selecting this page itself). Then you can easily calculate the path. Often I have an override if the business *wants* to have a certain folder structure, they can change it.

That is one way of *many* possibilities.

Try to use browse_for_output in place of browse for link it may help...
