Needs for database.properties

Hello everyone,
we recently had the need to rebuild the whole database for our production livesite environment, to change the character encoding from (???) to utf-8.

We use custom datasources to access the database from external and components and we already changed the references in them to point to the new database.

Our DBA still report that some connection to the old database are still present, after a bit i found out that there is this:

.../iw-runtime.war/WEB-INF/conf/livesite_customer/database.properties

That still have the old database references.

My questions are:

Whats the purpose for this database connection?
is it provided to avoid custom connection pool management?
what can i mess up something by changing it (our dba want to dismiss the old DB)?
are there any ootb functionalities that use it on the background?

you didn't specify your LS version.

there are some OOTB features / demo components that use the database...

most notably for visitor profiles (i.e. user accounts); and some (demo) content types associated with demo components (e.g. the ratings component from the Component Guide site; or blog etc). It doesn't sound like you're using these ... but you should be the judge of that
