unix change group on branch ?

nipper

DOS has iwchgrp.exe to change the group of a branch. Anyway to do this on SOlaris ? Someone made & poplated several branches with no group. I do not want to give this group tsadmin rights, who is the only owner.

man chgrp

I was not certain we should use that on a branch, but what the heck.

A branch is just another directory to the file system, after all. I use chgrp on workareas all the time. I assume using it on a branch is no different.

Problem is that the WORKAREA STAGING and EDITION directories will not change (readonly file system) so I do not think the group now has complete admin rights for the branch.

Yes, you can't change group ownership on a branch.

Check this:

Yeah, I don't think a branch is "just another directory on the filesystem."

I think the IWOV kernel intercepts and prevents most operations on STAGING and EDITION directories that might normally be allowed in a plain-jane filesystem.

I think you can chgrp the actual branch, but the recursive flag in your chgrp -R branch won't apply to the WORKAREA, STAGING and EDITION directories beneath your branch.

At least, that's the behavior I remember the last time I tried this. . . .

To validate that last post (and to make sure I'm not crazy), I offer as evidence a before & after snapshot of my attempt to chgrp -R a test branch on a TS 5.5.2 system, running on Solaris 8

Before

drwxrwxr-x 5 iwmgr iwspt 512 Apr 9 10:26 test
bash-2.03$ ls -l test
total 3
dr-xr-xr-x 3 iwmgr iwspt 512 Apr 9 10:26 EDITION
dr-xr-xr-x 4 iwmgr iwspt 512 Apr 15 09:39 STAGING
dr-xr-xr-x 3 iwmgr iwspt 512 Apr 14 08:18 WORKAREA

Run the command:
chgrp -R iwmgr:iwfmdev test

After

drwxrwxr-x 5 iwmgr iwfmdev 512 Apr 9 10:26 test
bash-2.03$ ls -l test
total 3
dr-xr-xr-x 3 iwmgr iwspt 512 Apr 9 10:26 EDITION
dr-xr-xr-x 4 iwmgr iwspt 512 Apr 15 09:39 STAGING
dr-xr-xr-x 3 iwmgr iwspt 512 Apr 14 08:18 WORKAREA

Also, FYI, when I ran the chgrp command, I ran it as sudo, and got these messages:

bash-2.03$ sudo chgrp -R iwfmdev /iwmnt/default/main/admin/test/
chgrp: EDITION: Read-only file system
chgrp: EDITION: Read-only file system
chgrp: WORKAREA: Read-only file system
chgrp: WORKAREA: Read-only file system
chgrp: STAGING: Read-only file system
chgrp: STAGING: Read-only file system

I stand corrected. But in reality, what does the group a branch is shared with get to accomplish anyway? Doesn't all that group get to do consist primarily of creating and deleting workareas?

Yeah, I think you're right.

I've been screwed in the past when I had a user coming from /etc/passwd own a lot of branches and then that user was "migrated" to LDAP, where I was told the uid from /etc/passwd was already in use by an LDAP user so, gee, would I mind if we switched uids? That was a fun week.

Tom,
I have found that on on solaris 8, doing an 'ls' was not sufficient to check user|group permissions on a file in the IWSERVER mount.

I have never had a problem with the UI seeing the correct permissions, but when on the command line, I often use the CLT for finding out file attributes:

iwattrib main owner
iwattrib main group

Just curious... Did your "chgrp -R" command recurse into all workareas and "modify" every file in every workarea?
