presence/absence of form field

Hi,

We've added a new field to a form with a default value. How, in the tpl, do I check, in existing forms, for the presence or absence of this new field? If it's absent, I want to write in the html that it should have.

When I open an existing form, even though I see the new field there with the default value selected, I actually have to interact with the field in order for the value to make it to the xml.
