Migrate TS from Solaris to Linux

Ugan

Hi Everyone –

TS 6.7.2 on Solaris 2.9 (No patches)

We are planning to upgrade from 6.7.2 to 7.2 and also planning to migrate the OS from Solaris to Linux, I wanted to understand the different implications and potential issues suffered during this migration for the below activities.

1) Content store migration. (Possibility of Solaris store format to Linux store format and compatibility).
2) User Management.
3) Teamsite customizations.
4) Performance.
5) Support for active directory services like LDAP.
6) Any show stoppers or other issues.

If anyone have any documents or reference links for this topics, please share.

Thanks,
UD.

TS 6.7.2 on Solaris 2.9 (No patches) 1) Content store migration. (Possibility of Solaris store format to Linux store format and compatibility).

Can be done - should move across as-is, or you could look to use iwmigrate if you wanted to slim the content store down in the process (take latest Editions for example). It's a good opportunity to take the latest active content and leave the rest behind.

You might want to consider doing some "content cleansing" as part of the process - delete any redundent assets / folder structures / branches etc.

I'd suggest running an iwfsck to make sure all is well before you move it.
If you get any errors then you may not to woirk them through with Autonomy Support.

I'd also suggest doing an iwfsshrink to make sure you're not transferring redundant content.

Naturally, back everything up before, during and after...

You'll will need to consider doing an iwidmap to remap content store file ownership on teh new system.

2) User Management.

See above for remapping.

Depends on how your users are currently defined and what sort of Groups you have in place for them. If you have TS Groups then that will probably make life a bit easier.

3) Teamsite customizations

Depends on what has been customised

Generally speaking it should be OK, but you'd need to consider things like paths to file locations etc.

4) Performance.

Not aware of any great performance hit moving between similarly spec'd servers. If you're going VM, then expect to have to adjust spec to account for virtual environment.

5) Support for active directory services like LDAP.

As long as you can get Linux to integrate with LDAP, then TeamSite should be able to talk to LDAP too.

6) Any show stoppers or other issues.

I have done this before with another customer, and it worked well for them. I don't have all the steps to hand, but with care and attention, it can be done.

You first decision is whether to upgrade in situ and then move, or move and then upgrade, or install fresh and migrate/update...

Personally, I'd go for a fresh install as TS 7.2 is significantly different and presumably you'll have a new server ready for the install, which you'll be able to rebuild and test prior to releasing.
