CGI Task vs external task????

Hi,

what is the basic difference between cgitask and external task and it would be great if someone can explain that when should we use external task and when should we go with cgi task in practical scenarion.
I mean to say that under what circumstances or requirements we can decide that we should use which approach.

I agree with you that I should read the Manuals and I have done that but Manuals too won't provide you the handling of practical scenarios which only comes with experience that's why I am asking the questions from experienced guys through these posts.

I really don't understand why are we taking the thread in an entirely different direction it's a forum where you can clear your doubts which is I am doing may be my title of the thread is distracting you. Just for your information what I understand after reading the manuals is CGI task actually hits the HTTP request just like a servlet however an external task simple excute a perl program.

We are taking it this way because you are asking something that is beyond basic. So it is obvious that you are looking to be spoon fed some information you can easily get from reading the manuals. Which begs the question - do you even have access to the manuals? It is painfully obvious why you would choose a CGI over an externaltask script. By you asking this (and your other) question, it is showing your glaring need for some training and/or access to the documentation.

I completely agree with you ghoti that language has nothing to do with tasks as we can take any language, I had just took an example earlier. Just to make my question more specific I wanted to know that why should we go with CGI task because it should be used when you want to post your information via get or post method, however my confusion is that the same thing I can achieve with external task or URLexternal task by setting the task variables in case you don't want to send the information via query parameters or command line arguments.

With CGI tasks you can have user interaction (Users can influence the transition). With external tasks its not possible.

Thanks for your reply Murugan but if you look at the example provided in Manual(i.e. external_task_test.wft), there also they are taking input from user like comments, iterations etc. and invoking it through external task.

The user interaction i mentioned was at the Task level not at the Job initiation screen.

Hey I'd suggest if you could just go through the purpose of a CGI script in general.

That will really help you understand its usefuleness from TeamSIte perspective.
