Server configuration files

First time I am coming across server config files.
odbase.xml and odrcvr.xml are the two server config files. odbase.xml on base and odrcvr.xml on receiver are required or optional (I guess its compulsory)? If I have odbase.xml, do I need to have odrcvr.xml ?
A lot of information is already contained in odbase.xml for server configuration. Is it for base server only or will it apply to receiver server also ? do I need to have separate odrcvr.xml on receiver server ?

"Enabling target side Deploy and Run", when this field is specified on odbase.xml, does it take care of dnr script on receiver ?
Logging defaults provided on odbase.xml - Does it take care of logging on receiver and base both ?
If all these parameters can be set on odbase.xml, do we still need odrcvr.xml ?
Is allowedHosts field to be specified in odrcvr.xml only or also in odbase.xml ? As odrcvr.xml is the file, where allowedHosts has a meaning.

The server configuration file is just that - a configuration file for the server. If you're working with a Base Server - then you have to configure the odbase.xml; if you're working with a Receiver then you have to configure the odrcvr.xml.

Since a Base server can act as both a sender and receiver you'll see settings in odbase.xml that have to deal with receiving -- for that server, however you will not see sender settings in the odrcvr.xml because that server can only handle receiving.

Why would a Base Server act as a Receiver too? Because you can do loop-back deployments (such as the OOTB test.xml used for verifying the installation) or because you have multiple TeamSite servers (DEV, QA, PROD) and want to be able to deploy content from one to the other (these are the most common uses of having a Base Server act as a receiver too, there are others).

So yes - you need an odrcvr.xml on a receiver.
