Yes. You can use LSDS without installing LSCS. LSDS is like earlier LiveSite Runtime environment.LSCS is used for rules engine, targeting and content retrieval functionality. LSCS is an HTTP REST server which is used as a content repository for LiveSite Runtime. Now you can fetch metadata as well on runtime environment.
Another questionCan one instance of LSDS serve multiple instances of webserver. So if the content gets deployed on different webservers (load balancing), can one instance of LSDS render the content from these load balanced web servers?
Multiple LSDS servers can be load balanced. Your question is a bit confusing at the end so just to be extra clear: LSDS runs on an application server. Typically, static assets are deployed to web server(s) and all LS related assets are deployed to LSDS server(s). You can definitely have a load balancer between your web server(s) and your LSDS server(s) -- this is not uncommon.
When you say LS related assets you mean .page files etc. and web server related assets mean images, videos etc. Right?
I have 3 servers. Can .page, images, videos etc be present on 2 of these servers (all the content and asset pieces be present on both the servers). LSDS will run on third server and will serve .page, images, videos etc coming from 2 other servers (load balanced servers). Is it possible?
Right.Your question is a not totally clear to me.
If you are trying to say "externalizing" the "web root" directory - that is not directly supported with the current version (7.2). However, if you are talking about the entire install being on a network drive then sure OR if Unix/Solaris then you can have symlinks.

I believe the question is: Is LSDS required on all WEB servers? In a standard two tier environment, TeamSite deploys content to his 3 web servers. Now, he wants to deploy LiveSite assets (.pages, images, etc.) to these 3 web servers. Does he have to have LSDS installed on all three web servers? Or can one instance of LSDS service all three? Being that you said LSDS acts as your application server, I'm assuming "yes."
