Reverting back to original version if new installationn fails

We may be installing new teamsite 7.2. Current version is 6.7.2
If this new installation fails, how do I make sure that I fall beck to current version of TS 672 ?
Is that automatically falling back to current version or do I need to take any backup ?
Usually, when an installation fails, previous version is still in effect (e g widows server) and I donty have to take a backup of current version. Does it work same with TS672 ?

In theory yes.

Practice is not so much.

Do you use VMs ? Have a snapshot of the VM, or a *really* good backup.

do you not understand?

If you are using virtual machines (VMs) make sure to take a snapshot of the server before trying the upgrade so you can restore the snapshot if the upgrade doesn't work.

If you are not using virtual machines, get your System Administrators to make a full backup of the entire server before trying the upgrade, so you can restore the backup if the upgrade doesn't work.

Alternatively, do a fresh installation on a new server - if all goes well, decommission the old server - otherwise wipe-and-retry the new server.

Do not trust the uninstall. Have a second option (restore from backup, reinstall, or best is to use a Virtual Server and restore it)

This is what I understand (and not understand)

1) Copy iw-store, iw-home and save it in another place or say external hard drive. Name it as iw-store_bkup and iw-home_bkup.
- I am not sure about the format of iw-store_bkup in this case.
- If I store iw-store_bkup on the same hard drive where iw-store is, does it create another content store ?
- If backup is being taken regularly on an external tape, is it not good enough that I need to take another backup ? Can I not recover content from external tape ?

2) If I am upgrading from current version of TS672 to TS72, does the TS automatically take care of content store or do I need to take backup with upgrade also ? In case upgrade fails does existing version of TS672 remain unaffected and can it be used without any issues ? does failed upgrade hurt existing content store ?

3) Why do I need backup in case of a new installation ? As there is no content created ?

4) Now install newer version of TeamSite, which will create new content store in place of existing iw-store. Now do I need to uninstall TS672 before installing TS72 ? or can I start installing TS72, over TS672 and it will automatically remove TS672 ?

5) If new installation is successful, then copy the iw-store_bkup in this new content store

4) copy configuration files from iw-home_bkup into new iw-home.

Will this get new installation working ?

In case new installation fails, will the previous version of TS be still in effect or do I need to reinstall previous version and copy the content in iw-store from iw-store_bkup and iw-home_bkup ?

You've been given sufficient information for a reasonably experienced TS-sys-admin to do what needs to be done. Based on your questions - I recommend that you do not attempt to perform this upgrade. Get someone with a lot more experience to come in and help you though it.
Hopefully they'll do some knowledge transfer and reasonable documentation, so that you'll be able to do it yourself if/when the need arises again.

Actually Sr Admin will be doing this upgrade. I will just be there watching.
But even to understand whats going on, I need to be prepared.
Thats why I have asked these questions which are confusing me. If someone can answer me these questions, I will be in a better position to grasp about whats going on when actual upgradation is taking place. And my help someone who is new to installation and upgrade.

I suggest you and your "Senior" Admin read the install documents, KB articles on the Support site, and threads on DevNet before they attempt to do this process -- or hire someone who knows what they're doing.

If it works it works - yay.If it fails, you either need to re-try or start from scratch. If you have good backups you can remove everything and restore from backup to get back to the old version.As as has been suggested - you are much better off doing a fresh installation on a new server and manually bringing over both the content and the customizations - precisely because a failed upgrade is a non-trivial mess to get out of.

If this is a fresh installation, then there was no original.

Are you saying that someone copied templating.cfg over available_templates.cfg ?
