shell script for archiving logs

Hi ,

Had anyone worked on any shell script having below requirements

The logs folder path shouldn't be hardcoded, declare it as variable.

Compress logs older than a month and make it a gzip or zip so that we can save space. Name the gzip as Logs-.gzip

Delete the log's gzip older than 3 months. Again the month's parameter should be declared as variable.

Please let me know if anyone worked on it before.

Have you played with the OOTB log rotation function with TS 7.x+? I think it should cover about 80%+ of your requirements. You should be able to script for zipping the old logs and move them somewhere.

I would also encourage you to look at the log4j configuration files to place your logs anywhere you want them. OOTB logs could be configured via iw.cfg file.

Thanks for the reply ,but can you please elaborate more on the OOTB log rotation and also we are implementing this in TS 672 SP1 version but in future we will be implementing it in TS 7.x version,so please let me know any solution to this.

OOTB log rotation only applies to 7.x (and not for some log files) - for earlier versions you have to write your own process for handling the log rotations which has to first stop the TS services, then rotate the logs, then restart the services.

If you want to compress the rolled-over log files, you can use something like the perl module Archive::Zip.

(note: OD has been doing log rotation all along - or at least as long as I can remember right now - but it doesn't do compression or removal)

I have created a shell script and added the same in the cronjob on my solaris box.

This archives/compresses Old OD logs.
