I would like my perl code to find what button a user selected to move the workflow on. I see the information in the job properties but I can't find a perl function to retrieve it:

I would like an external task to read what button a user selected on a specified step instead of sending the workflow to an external task to create a workflow variable.

Is there a perl function that can do this?

In short - there's no "perl function" to do this - but more to the point - what's the use-case?
Are you saying that you have task-A and task-B and that the user can select more than one button on Task-A to transition to task-B??
Or is it that you have Task-A, Task-B, and Task-C and that one could transition from either Task-A or Task-B to Task-C?

You could potentially create an iwat trigger script to process the particular event and set a Job variable through the trigger script -- but without understanding more about the actual scenario you're trying to deal with, it's difficult to know whether that would work (or whether your scenario is reasonable)
