Is perl not required from Teamsite 7 series?

It is not required though it may still be used if you want. You need to check the implementation to be certain.

Along with a plethora of customizations that exist out there, some of the OOTB stuff (e.g: WFTs and example FormsPublisher files) still uses it - so it's "required" in that sense.

However, Autonomy is, and has been for some time, trying to get everyone to move from Perl to Java so anything that you can do in Java (and XSL) is generally better at being "future-proofed" than the stuff you do in Perl.

While I don't think there is any reasonable way they could just stop shipping the exiting iwperl distribution - they generally are not updating any of it - so interfaces to all new features and functionality will only be through Java (and/or CLTs which you could still call from Perl :-)

So - is it required - not really; is it obsolete - not yet... (hopefully I'll be retired by then ;-)

You are not going to retire.

But I believe you have more interest in Perl in comparison to Java.

I'm sure I'll retire someday, when is the question :-)

I enjoy Perl a lot - for various reasons, but I've gotten to do some work in Java too and understand some of its advantages. Unfortunately:

However, things being the way they are - new features and functionality in TS are likely only to be accessible via Java or CLTs - we'll have to write our own wrappers for the CLTs to use Perl, and in some cases even that probably won't work (e.g.: DependencyManager). This includes working with Non-OS Users.Fortunately (I believe) there is far too much legacy code out there written in Perl that I don't see any way that AIWOV can stop shipping and "supporting" it - at least not until it just "breaks" - then we'll see if they bother to make a new version of iwperl or just declare it officially dead (if they do, it will be interesting to see how many customers upgrade ;-)
