I am trying to read the latest 25 editions using the iwattrib clt. I assigned an edition('INITIAL') to an variable and read the previous edition of it. But the code is fetching only the first previous edition of the specified edition and then it gives error saying, "Please specify an edition". Could someone help me out?

It *seems* that you will get 25 oldest, not most recent Editions this way. 'INITIAL' does not normally have previous Edition.

So, if you start from the INITIAL, you may perhaps use 'nextedition' attribute instead of 'prevedition' and go all the way
up. Then you'll make/use an array slice to get 25 latest Edition, etc. There are IMO better ways to do it but that'll work.

Another strange thing is this command: $output = `$lastEdition 2>&1`; An Edition name is not OS Command, why would
you try to execute it as such? Perhaps you simply want $output = $lastEdition; ?

If I try to do $output = $lastEdition; , instead of $output = `$lastEdition 2>&1`; I only get the following output.

d:\iw-home\bin\iwattrib -n /default/main/inst/EDITION/INITIAL nextedition

But if I use $output = `$lastEdition 2>&1`; , it gives me the next edition.

You might be better served by using iwlist branch-vpath/EDITION to get a list of [named] editions - i.e.[not tested]:

chomp(@edlist); # remove newlines
# keep only the last 25 editions if there are more than 25
if (@edlist > 25) {
    my $end = scalar @edlist;
    my $start = $end - 25;
@edlist = @edlist[$start..$end];
}
print join("\n", @edlist);

If you want to include un-named editions too - add a -k flag to the iwlist command.

But what we need is to fetch the first 25 editions, without reading the entire list of editions, because, we have thousands of editions, which takes very long time to be traversed. So I am looking for a solution which reads the latest 25 editions without reading all the editions and not taking much time to load.

Running a command 25 times to get 25 different editions is going to be costly in terms of time / process overhead. Unfortunately iwlist always starts from the oldest edition - however, even then, I believe my code is significantly faster that yours (once you fix it - which I have, see below).

I ran this on my virtual W2K3 server using TS 7.1 on a branch where I just created 1000 editions. The results I got were:

Benchmark: timing 100 iterations of fish, posted...
      fish: 27 wallclock secs ( 0.09 usr +  0.05 sys =  0.14 CPU) @ 709.22/s (n=100)
            (warning: too few iterations for a reliable count)
    posted: 628 wallclock secs ( 0.45 usr +  1.59 sys =  2.05 CPU) @ 48.83/s (n=100)

If you change the variable

$DOTIME

from 1 to 0 - you'll see the output is identical. If you change the first argument to

timethese

to something like 1000, then you'll probably get rid of the warnings, but prepare to wait a while for the results.
