OD-DD synchronization
msa02
I want to setup a process where I can have synchronized deployment. By looking at the documentation, it seems a little complicated. I'm sure somebody should have gone through this process. Can you guys help me clarify a few queries:
1) Can we setup synchronization in such a way that OD to deploy all the files needed but DD should use only the specified config file(s) for deploying database assets.
2) Do we have the option of adding to or droping DD cfg file(s) from the synchronization process.
3) Is there a way for OD to use filelist and still have synchronization, documentation says that deployment from edition is only the supported option.
I'm are using TS 5.0.1, DD5.2.1, OD5.5.1 on Solaris

1) Can we setup synchronization in such a way that OD to deploy all the files needed but DD should use only the specified config file(s) for deploying database assets.
RESPONSE: Are the db assets associated with the files being OD'd? If so, then the DD config files are the well-known loadb.cfg and tsxml.cfg. If you have the lastest SP, you can overide these filenames via the -X options of the ddsync.ipl invocation.
If the OD and DD deployments are essentially disjoint, but you want to combine them in a single deployment, you can just invoke DD directly from DNR in the OD deployment configuration.
2) Do we have the option of adding to or droping DD cfg file(s) from the synchronization process.
RESPONSE: not sure what you intend here. Using the OD-DD intergration solution requires DD cfg files.
3) Is there a way for OD to use filelist and still have synchronization, documentation says that deployment from edition is only the supported option.
RESPONSE: Using filelist in the context of OD-DD has not been certified, but it can work. Try tweaking the OD deployment cfg to be a filelist deploy. And also tweak the DD cfgs to be filelist also.

Many thanks for your reply!
1) Currently we have one DD config file to deploy TS metadata to database. The curreent process we have is that there is a a datadeploy checkbox in the OD cgi. If the user wants to activate DD, he just checks that box. The process is disjoint currently.
Since I'm in the planning phase to synchonize the process, I don't really have a clear idea what loaddb.cfg and tsxml.cfg files are. All I know is that they are generated when I will setup the synchronization process. The point here is that OD first deploys file assets to application servers (ATG) and then to webserver. Essentially, the synchronized process should be able to rollback everything if DD fails in the end. I don't whether it is possible or not.
2) As I haven't gone through this process yet, I want to make sure that since I have only one DD config file currently, would I be able to add another config file related to another metadata. I'm talking about the manually written deployment cfg file used in conjuction with iwdd.ipl ( iwdd.ipl cfg=abcd.cfg deployment=ea-to-db)

In the OD-DD solution, the tsxml.cfg is a DD cfg used to
extract TS EAs/DCRs into dump files which OD will deploy
to the remote receiver.
The loaddb.cfg is the DD cfg that is used to subsequently
import the data in the just deployed dump files into the database.
DD is run twice in the overall OD-DD scenario. First to
generate dump files on the sender-side, and second to update the database from the target-side.
OD is being used as the conduit to transfer the dump files containg the TS EAs/DCRs. The conduit approach is
useful if SSL deployments are needed.
You dont necessarily need to use OD as the conduit if your situation doesnt require it. You could set up an OD source-after-deploy DNR script that invokes DD to deploy your database assets.
The DNR script needs to check for the return result of the DD invocation and if error spit out the xml element <response code="-2"/> as the means to communicte back to OD that the DNR failed, so that OD can rollback the deployed files.
This is essentially what the ddsync.ipl script does, albeit in much more complex fashion.
As for using multiple DD cfs, I suppose you could invoke DD multiple times from the DNR script, but then you go outside the bounds of the DD transaction. One DD invoke may succeed but the subsequent DD invoke may fail and you can't rollback the previous DD invoke because its been commited. Its probably best to use one DD cfg per OD deployment to maintain transactional integrity.

Excellent! This was never clear to me before like it is now! Thanks!
I'm just wondering, how would OD_DD synchronzation fit into this particular scenario:
1) deploy file assets to multiple atg servers
2) file assets to weservers
3) deploy database assets whcih is being accessed by the atg servers.
Could that be done in a single transaction. How can I achieve different rollback scenaio.
Many Thanks again!

Do all ATG servers access one database, or does each have its own database? This can be a difficult scenario to implement since the database transaction is managed within the scope of the deployment leg running the DNR that calls DataDeploy.
There are a couple of feature requests for tightening the link between OpenDeploy and DataDeploy:
34623: Implement a direct link between OpenDeploy and DataDeploy
36628: OD-DD synchronized deployment to multiple targets in single deployment transaction
Please email me if you would like your company attached to either or both of these requests.

Todd,
Can you explain in detail how the od-dd synchronization works behind the scenes in the context that I want to run datadeploy as deploy-after DNR. When file assets deployment is successful, are the files renamed to their original name immediately (i.e., from temp file names to their original name) before running the DNR or OD waits for the DNR to execute successfully and then renames the files deployed?
If the files deployed at this point have been renamed, how the content rollover happens in case the DNR fails.
Please help me understanding the process!
Thanks!

OD handles files in a transactional deployment as follows. Assume there is a single file "foo" on the target that will be replaced:
1. Copy foo to foo.iwold
2. Deploy foo from source and call it foo.iwnew
3. Rename foo.iwnew to foo (replaces original file)
4a. If all is well, remove foo.iwold
4b. If there is a problem, rename foo.iwold to foo (restore original file) and delete foo.iwnew

Thanks Todd,
Now precisely at what point a deploy-after DNR script is invoked, after #3 or after #4a?
Migrateduser
It should occur after #3, so that if there is a problem with the DNR, the files can be reverted to the original state.

ok!. So assuming that datadeploy is run as deploy-after DNR script, and execution of the script is successful but somehow during the process database is not updated(some primary-keys violation etc. etc.), can the datadeploy failed error be reported back to OD, so that content can be rolled back?
msa02
I see there are 2 modes async="yes" or async="no". Just want to confirm whether even after the successful execution of DNR script, the daradeploy process fails due to some internal error, would the response back be repsonse-code ="-2" or it won't report this application error?
Migrateduser
I believe the DD DNR reports a -2 to trigger the OD transaction to roll back. But this presumes you run the DNR with async="no". Otherwise, OD doesn't wait for the DNR to come back with status.

thanks! I will contact you back if there is any problem after testing this functionality. Meanwhile is it possible to have a detailed information of the feature requests you have mentioned above? Is it somewhere posted on the interwoven site.
Thanks again and wish you a great weekend!
Appreciate your help.
